Have you, as a fiction author, ever been asked by people pretended to know everything about work of writing and publishing? Were you boxed into a corner by those questions? I was. I have ever faced few “judges” like that. But I never give a damn, ha-ha. I have a list of what did my friends negatively say about work of fiction. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to translate those into English. But I bet you already knew things like: all fiction writers are liar, a words waster, ones who live in imagination without seeing the real world, blah. Insignificant accusations that can be easily countered. * * * Teman-teman saya secara terpisah pernah menanyai kenapa saya menulis fiksi? Sebenarnya saya juga menulis nonfiksi. Tulisan-tulisan saya lebih sering nonfiksi, bahkan. Namun tetap saya jelaskan kenapa saya menulis fiksi. Lalu mereka pun menanggapi. Beberapa positif, beberapa negatif. Apa pembelaan Saudara? Saya mengakuinya, Yang Mulia. Tapi itu adalah [...]

Do you make a skeleton before writing your work of fiction? I do. It is important for me. The skeleton is like a railroad that makes the machinist saves his time from thinking all the time, “Where do I go after this station?” You can say, skeleton for a novel is the same as scenario for a movie. The audience does not need it, but the storymakers do. I love to use a mind mapping method. It is more practical and flexible. Have you known it? It is just like the picture I borrow from Mindmap.com beside. And, design something like that is painless. First of all, prepare a large sheet of paper and markers in various colors. Then, just follow where your brain goes: Write or draw the main idea in the middle of paper. Use a variety of colors. Write the sub ideas as a branch. Continue to develop the branch’s branches. If there are sub ideas associate with another, do not hesitate to connect them with line. In my opinion, you should separate a mind map for characters and for plot. There is no standard of excellence in mind mapping. As long as it helps you a [...]

Characterization. Portrayal of fictional characters. That is one of the most important parts in fiction writing. All writers can create characters. But not all of them can create characters who will spawn emotion within the readers. Firstly, you need to know in characterizing is that no one is entirely an angel, as no one is completely a demon. Then, start to scratch your heroes profile. The more detail the better. However, the basic is: his/her full name, gender, age, hobbies, physic, nature, and purpose of life. Once the profiles are defined, go develop those characters inside your storyline. The characters can be developed through the name, narration, dialogue, and the opinion of other characters. You may shortcut the characterization by putting yourself as a character in the story. Or simply pick your friend, lover, brother or boss real life profile. Change some in here and there, so if they are not happy with your work, they cannot sue you. This method will run faster. However, I prefer to create my own heroes. * * * Tidak ada karya fiksi yang tidak punya tokoh atau karakter. Karakterisasi atau proses menciptakan tokoh pun menjadi hal yang krusial. Proses ini tidak terlalu sulit [...]

When you were a toddler, you had probably ever cranky about the pain on your foot. There was no injury or wound, but pain happened. When your teeth started to grow and your gums ached. Or, when your last molar was about to appear. Those are few instances of growing pains, the pain due to growth. But do growing pains have something to do with writing? Sure! I believe I experience one. I have been writing a draft of thriller novel since the beginning of the year. Yet, it is not finished. I feel a bunch of difficulties. So my option is: give up to keep away the “pain”, or keep going and consider it as a period of growing pains. Once you believe in what you do, always choose the second option. Such pain is not a punishment for your deeds in the past. Such pain is a clear sign that there is something within you that is growing. Avoid it, and your skill would be stagnant. Face it, and you would grow. * * * Dulu sewaktu masih balita, mungkin Anda pernah rewel karena kaki Anda terasa sakit. Padahal Anda tidak kecapekan, terluka atau cedera apapun. Atau, saat [...]

A writer is also made of flesh and blood. S/he cannot write all the time. A writer needs some refreshment. Let yourself away from the activities associated with writing. Do outing, sport, watch TV/movies, play a game you like, go hangout with friends, cook, sleep, or whatever aside from writing and reading. Like “refresh” option on computer, refreshing activities are good. Occasionally, the inspiration and motivation come up after. Because when you are working, your brain focus on what you are doing. Meanwhile, when you are relaxing, your mind is free. So, it would be a lot more you see, hear and feel. Refreshment is not a sin. Just do not overdo it. By the time your body and mind have been refreshed, get back to the writing.
