Don’t claim yourself a coffee lover or a gourmet if you never drank luwak coffee. Yes, luwak coffee. Or kopi luwak in Indonesian. It’s not a kind of coffee made from luwak (palm civet a.k.a. Paradoxurus hermaphroditus). Just, the production process involves civets. This little mammal lives on the trees and eats the chosen coffee fruit. And it takes only a healthy civet to produce good quality coffee bean. Luwak coffee is so popular because of its unique making. It seems like people has just discovered a kind of new beverage. But the truth, luwak coffee has been existed in Indonesia since Netherland colonial era. It was started at the beginning of 18th century when Netherland opened the commercial plants gardening in Java and Sumatra. One of the plants is Arabica coffee from Yemen. In cultuurstelsel era, the colonial government forbade workers to pick the coffee for personal consumption. However, the people wanted to try that fine coffee. Then, they found a kind of civet which loves to eat coffee, but they only digest the pulp. They let the epidermis and coffee bean out from their body through dung. People picked the coffee beans in civet feces, washed them, fried [...]

Bumper car is chill. Go-kart is thrill. But crazy car… is kill! Gosh, it felt like riding a hoodless little car through abrupt bends. Driving uncontrollable up and down, left and right, in high speed, in 5-10 meters high. No wonder it’s called “crazy car”. Up there, all you can do is screaming. Or cursing. Fortunately, I had just watched 3D movie there. The movie was set on a mine, and we (the spectators) were set to sit on a mining cart which is speeding on madly. It’s quite thrilling. By that, I get used to keep cool and enjoy the show. I have a tip if you one day decide to ride such vehicles: just… trust! I mean, trust to its safety, and trust to God. Or else, don’t even try to step in! Because nothing you can do once you’re in. Jump? Ask to stop the car? Sleep? Faint? I don’t think you’d like to do that up there. Oh… By the way, I’m sorry if you don’t have any idea what we’re talking about. This is WBL (Wisata Bahari Lamongan) or Lamongan Marine Tourism. For your information, WBL is a mix of tourism places like Tanjung Kodok [...]

Last week, Brahm, Ihsan and I did photography session for this blog. Yeah, Warungfiksi.net will have a new look. I’m sorry if you recently found some error here so often. It’s a technical error, out of our reach. Mm, let’s back to the topic. By the way, Monkasel or Monumen Kapal Selam (Surabaya Submarine Monument) is the largest submarine monument in Asia. It is placed near Kalimas River with the idea from the senior of submarine sea army. The monument is located at Pemuda Street, Surabaya. The construction was started in July 1995. It was inaugurated by Basofi Sudirman as East Java Governor at the moment. Monkasel is a kind of KRI Pasopati 410 with SS Whiskey Class type. It’s produced in Vladi Wostok, Russia, in 1952. This submarine participated in sea army since January 29th, 1962, with a mission to crush enemy line (anti-shipping), supervise and raid. With 76.6 meters in length and 1,300 tons in weight, this submarine had a big role in defending sea territory. After taking pictures, we entered the submarine. There was a guide who explained about the ship. We came together with two girls from Thailand. So the guide spoke in English. He showed [...]

On October 2, 2009, UNESCO designated Indonesian batik as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The education, science and cultural organization of United Nations insisted that Indonesia preserves their batik heritage. Of course! I can’t see otherwise. Batik has long been Indonesian traditional clothes, since the kingdoms era. Though, I cannot just ignore the fact that batik or fabrics that have batik patterns are found also in Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, China, Azerbaijan, India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, even in African countries like Nigeria and Senegal. But in Indonesia, you will see batik as everyday life part of some people. Each region here has their own batik’s unique patterns. Relating to things in their daily life, which show up in the patterns design of nature, animals, flowers, human, folklore, and others. The culture always also influences the design. Batik from coastal cities of northern Java, for instance, has particularly vibrant color. It absorbs Javanese, Arabian, Chinese and Dutch cultures. You can say, batik is an ancient method of color dyeing. But actually, there is stamp batik and hand-made batik (called batik tulis). Making the second one is never easy. It involves a complex process with many hours of hard [...]

At Sepanjang street, Sidoarjo, you may possibly bump into this view: a pushcart display of a goat meat. The goat is about still intact, fresh, and small (that means it is still young). Sweet-scented smoke that signifies a grill emerges. You’re quite monk if you don’t drool in seconds. Warung Sate Barongan Pak Uniq (Mr. Uniq’s Barongan Brochettes Stall), that’s the name of this stand, open from noon until night. For you who don’t know yet, “sate” or “satai” is small pieces of meat roasted on skewer. This is a common food in Indonesia. Meanwhile, I cannot figure out what “barongan” is. May be it likes barongan in the context of Reog Ponorogo’s art: someone who used to eat everything. Coincidently, in this food stall, you can eat (almost) everything too. Its service is semi buffet. The customer may take cooked rice and chips in the corner of the stall room, as much as he wants! So, the customer with a big appetite would be spoiled here. Then how is reputation of this stall? Since I visited it only once, I don’t know precisely. But occasionally the artists and high functionaries of East Java took a lunch or dine here, [...]
