Characterization. Portrayal of fictional characters. That is one of the most important parts in fiction writing. All writers can create characters. But not all of them can create characters who will spawn emotion within the readers. Firstly, you need to know in characterizing is that no one is entirely an angel, as no one is completely a demon. Then, start to scratch your heroes profile. The more detail the better. However, the basic is: his/her full name, gender, age, hobbies, physic, nature, and purpose of life. Once the profiles are defined, go develop those characters inside your storyline. The characters can be developed through the name, narration, dialogue, and the opinion of other characters. You may shortcut the characterization by putting yourself as a character in the story. Or simply pick your friend, lover, brother or boss real life profile. Change some in here and there, so if they are not happy with your work, they cannot sue you. This method will work faster. However, I prefer to create my own heroes.

Did you know, every good book has always one simple idea which easy to understand, but unexpected. Just one. Not that more ideas in a book is forbidden. But, the books that stick on readers’ mind have only one simple idea yet unexpected. I give you examples. The Secret: “Ask, you’ll be given”. Message from Water: “Behave and speak in positive manner, because it would affect the waters around you.” Simple, yet unexpected! * * * Tahukah Anda, setiap buku yang baik selalu punya satu ide yang sederhana, mudah dipahami, namun tak terduga. Satu saja. The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference (Malcolm Gladwell, 2000): Ternyata ada hal kecil yang sulit kita kontrol tapi bisa membuat kita sukses besar. Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking (Malcolm [...]

I notice that writers have been always tempted to write in his work a main character who is a writer. Including myself. First, because a writer knows how the writer is. Second, because there are many great stories behind writing profession. A writer is a person with high dose of curiosity. And a writer has always wanted to tell the world what is in his brain. He can be so insightful. And such insights could potentially be a thrilling stories. Just watch The Shining (1980), Misery (1990), The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca (1997), Quills (2000), Moulin Rouge (2001), Adaptation (2002), Secret Window (2004), King Kong (2005), and so on. You’ll know that I’m right. * * * Beberapa hari lalu di Bandung, saya menonton The Adventures of Tintin bareng Rie Yanti. Tapi wartawan. Seorang wartawan memang berpeluang melakukan hal-hal besar seperti [...]

Let’s admit it, plagiarists are everywhere. Especially on Internet where Ctrl C and Ctrl V is a part of its practice. You may grateful when someone said your post is awesome and he then repost it on his own blog. But you know what, when he did that, your post and his are considered as copied content by duplication detector software. Though it is not a plagiarism, unless he did not mention your name, this might bring disadvantage to you in Google SERP (Search Engine Result Pages). It’s bad. To deal with something like this in Internet is never be easy. However, instead of wrap it up with legal action, you can deal with more elegantly. In the real world, we have copyright law. That can be bring to cyber world too: “You copied me, you’ll face the court!” But the essence of Internet is sharing. Think about it, what would the Internet be if we all are forbidden to share and copy-paste? So, I think there is another way to deal with the duplicators. I wrapped up my idea to a simple presentation below. Ide tulisan ini terpantik dari komen seseorang. Dia meminta saya menjadi pembaca pertama bagi naskah [...]

Have you, as a fiction author, ever been asked by people pretended to know everything about work of writing and publishing? Were you boxed into a corner by those questions? I was. I have ever faced few “judges” like that. But I never give a damn, ha-ha. I have a list of what did my friends negatively say about work of fiction. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to translate those into English. But I bet you already knew things like: all fiction writers are liar, a words waster, ones who live in imagination without seeing the real world, blah. Insignificant accusations that can be easily countered. * * * Teman-teman saya secara terpisah pernah menanyai kenapa saya menulis fiksi? Sebenarnya saya juga menulis nonfiksi. Tulisan-tulisan saya lebih sering nonfiksi, bahkan. Namun tetap saya jelaskan kenapa saya menulis fiksi. Lalu mereka pun menanggapi. Beberapa positif, beberapa negatif. Apa pembelaan Saudara? Saya mengakuinya, Yang Mulia. Tapi itu adalah [...]
