Nah, I don’t think so. You don’t have to join a writer community to become a writer. However, if you want to enhance your writing, this is not a bad idea at all. It doesn’t matter whether it’s physical community or online community, the writing community has always following advantage.

1. Learn to write in conducive. The members will critique your work, give the input, motivation, even benchmark the achievements each other.
2. As you have already fans. If your novel is about to be published, you can ask them to be first buyers.
3. Get more recommendations. Many heads will share with you about the proper media, publishers for your work, even you can discuss the latest promotion tricks.
4. Join a community makes a writer look serious. This is one of editor’s considerations to publish one’s work.

Saya yakin di Indonesia ada banyak komunitas atau klab menulis. Salah satu yang paling banyak dikenal dan banyak cabangnya yakni Forum Lingkar Pena (FLP). Di Bandung dan sekitarnya pun ada Institut Nalar Jatinangor, gank menulis Mnemonic, Arena Studi Apresiasi Sastra (ASAS) UPI, Komunitas Sastra Indonesia, Komunitas Sastra Bandung Utara, Klab Nulis Tobucil. Masih banyak lagi. Bahkan November kemarin, saya dan beberapa teman sesama penulis di Cicalengka mendirikan Balé Sastra Cicalengka (BSC).

Biasanya, di sana ada penulis senior yang bertugas sharing cara-cara menulis. Dengan begitu, komunitas itu bisa menjadi tempat yang kondusif untuk belajar menulis.

Dalam klab menulis, kita belajar teori-teori menulis terlebih dahulu sebelum kita disuruh menulis. Namun ada juga yang menggunakan metode learning by doing. Ujung-ujungnya sama saja: tulisan kita dikomentari, diberi saran dan kritik.

Sebetulnya, kalau hanya untuk meminta komentar pembaca sih tak bergabung di komunitas menulis pun tak masalah. Mungkin ada penulis yang lebih nyaman atau lebih suka belajar menulis secara otodidak atau malas berinteraksi dengan orang banyak biarpun sesama penulis (orang semacam ini popular dengan sebutan shy writer). Saat membutuhkan komentar pembaca, dia tinggal minta kepada orang terdekatnya untuk menjadi proofreader.

Tanpa komunitas bisa saja. Tapi, bergabung dengan komunitas menulis tentu memiliki manfaat lebih.

1. Belajar menulis dengan kondusif. Karya kita akan dikritik, diberi saran, dibandingkan dengan sesama anggota. Sehingga akan jelas pencapaian kita. Pun, ketika semangat mulai luntur, anggota-anggota lainnya biasanya akan memberi suntikan motivasi.
2. Seperti sudah mempunyai fans. Jika karya kita (umpamanya novel) diterbitkan, yang pertama kita beritahu ya teman-teman sesama anggota. “Novel saya terbit bulan depan. Beli ya.”
3. Mendapat banyak rekomendasi. Misalnya kita menulis cerita remaja dengan bahasa populer. Warga komunitas bisa memberitahu naskah itu sebaiknya dikirim ke majalah remaja ABC atau ke penerbit DEF. Mereka juga dapat menyarankan trik promosi yang termutakhir.
4. Nama komunitas adalah pertimbangan redaktur koran atau pihak penerbit untuk memuat atau menerbitkan karya kita. Saya sering membaca biodata singkat penulis di surat kabar seperti ini, “Penulis bergiat di komunitas menulis XYZ”.

Tapi jangan salah, komunitas tidak bisa dikekang tembok geografi. Membangun dan menggiatkan komunitas menulis secara online pun bisa saja. Seperti blogging di Thoughts (yang ini pesan sponsor). Di sana ada forum diskusi, dengan komunitas yang interaktif. Ini seperti kredo, “Apapun yang offline kelak akan menjadi online.” Yah, termasuk komunitas menulis.

If you pass Aceh Street, Sumatera Street, or Sumbawa Street, you will see a unique park from the outside. It is livened up by the mini-train, mini-cars, bicycles, the traffic signs, carrousel, and the children playing. Sometimes, you notice also the policemen or policewomen teach the children about the traffic signs there. The park called Insulindepark a.k.a. Lalu Lintas Park. I’ve been there. It is located at Belitung Street, Bandung City.

As its name, Lalu Lintas Park (Traffic Park in English) was built to make the children understand about the traffic. But you know what, Lalu Lintas Park actually was a swamp a long, long time ago. Then, it became a place for military training from 1915 until 1919. In 1920, it turned into a Tropical Park. It was named Insulindepark five years later.

On March 1st, 1958, the name was changed once again to Lalu Lintas Park, which means Traffic Park. After the incident of Septembre 30th, 1965, we added the name of Ade Irma Suryani to commemorate the daughter of A. H. Nasution, one of the generals who were the target of the assassination in Indonesia’s Revolution Era.

You won’t trace that history only by looking the park’s appearance (that’s why I wrote this ^_^). It’s a fun park now! There are swimming pool, kindergarten or playground, mini-library for children, and outbond place. Refreshing air come up from the big, old trees.

Sure you can go picnic here with your family or friends. The ticket costs only 5,000 IDR for Sunday and 4,000 IDR for other days. Do you want to take a mini-train? As Obama says, “Yes we can!” But you have to pay 3,500 IDR more.

It was Sunday. The Lalu Lintas Park was crowded. Children enjoyed playing and the parents followed after.

Me, I came with my friend. I had told her that I wanted to walk around this park. I did it. But somehow, I was not happy. I just felt that I had lost something and wanted to take it back. Whether it be Oktoberfest in Germany or a tribal funeral in the backwaters of Indonesia, we want to hear about it. We like a little history about the event you’re covering although we’re fairly flexible. We appreciate all styles of quality writing.

We’re after timeless articles. This can be simple for something like La Tomatina – an event which tends to remain the same year in, year out but more difficult for music festivals whose lineups change annually. So here’s a music festival example we prepared a little earlier.

If you went to Coachella in 2008, we don’t want a breakdown of who played what on which stage, we’d rather more about the vibe of the place, the setup and the layout, the genre of music played and the history of the event rather than lineups and playlists. Basically we want something that will act as a guide to a music festival whilst capturing it’s essence.

We want your article be as close as can be to relevant five years down the track as it is today. Don’t be put off if we already have an article that covers a festival you’d like to write about, we love getting different perspectives of the same event.

Our articles are usually between 500 and 1,000 words in length, although we do make exceptions. We love to receive accompanying photos but your words is what 2camels is all about.
