The Three-lobed Burning Eye (3LBE) is a magazine of speculative fiction published online two or three times per year since 1999. Every other year, we publish an annual anthology in trade paperback. Each issue features six stories. Terms are one-time electronic rights, with non-exclusive archival rights, and one-time print rights. Beginning with issue #20, we will offer the magazine in PDF and various e-book formats. Payment to writers is 1¢ per word up to $35, paid on publication (via PayPal), plus one contributor’s copy of the annual. We are looking for quality speculative fiction. We tend toward horror and dark fantasy, and what you might call magical realism or “slipstream” or “cross-genre”. We might consider an occasional science fiction, suspense or even western tale, though the story must contain some speculative element. We want stories that expand genre by placing value on originality in character, narrative and plot. We want only your best fiction, distinct and remarkable tales that the reader cannot forget. We encourage multi-cultural points of view. Please read at least one issue before submitting. We are welcome the short stories less than 7,000 words. Actually, we will consider flash fiction stories (500–1,000 words), but these are a [...]

Well written, well researched stories that Miami Herald cannot easily get on the wires. That’s it’s looking for. Miami Herald tends to buy more for theme issues (see its Editorial Calendar). To be considered, copy for theme issues must be received four to six weeks in advance of the publication date. Your best bets are stories about Latin America, the Caribbean, Florida and any destination in which children are an integral part of the experience. The Herald is glad to look at any finished manuscript on speculation only. You may submit those to travel@MiamiHerald.com (only by email). Please indicate the subject matter in the reference line. And unfortunately, Miami Herald cannot respond to queries and discourage phone calls due to of time pressures. It doesn’t make assignments to freelancers. Also, Miami Herald doesn’t permit use of its name in order to obtain free or reduced travel or accommodations. Miami Herald tends to hold onto to stories for a good bit of time to see if they will fit with their editorial schedule. Because of the high volume of submissions, Miami Herald is unable to respond to each writer individually. Please give at least 2-3 months before asking unless there is [...]

PodCastle is looking for fantasy stories. PodCastle opens to all the sub-genres of fantasy, from magical realism to urban fantasy to slipstream to high fantasy, and everything in between. Fantastical or non-real content should be meaningful to the story. If you have a science fiction story, please send it to our sister podcast, Escape Pod. Horror fiction should be directed to Pseudopod. The dividing line between horror and fantasy can be tricky. PodCastle is open to dark fantasy. PodCastle primarily interested in two lengths of fiction, which the PodCastle has dubbed (somewhat arbitrarily) “short fiction” and “flash fiction.” Short Fiction: 2,000-6,000 words for $100. Flash Fiction: Up to 1,000 words for $20. PodCastle prefers reprints, or works with a prior publication credit. The PodCastle defines “publication” as any venue that paid you money for your work, online or on paper. Unpublished work will be considered as well. But if your story’s good enough for it to buy it, it’s probably good enough to sell to another market first. Why not try to get two audiences and two checks? PodCastle.org is an audio magazine. Our audience can’t skim past the boring parts. While the magazine appreciates beautiful stories, those that feature [...]
