At Sepanjang street, Sidoarjo, you may possibly bump into this view: a pushcart display of a goat meat. The goat is about still intact, fresh, and small (that means it is still young). Sweet-scented smoke that signifies a grill emerges. You’re quite monk if you don’t drool in seconds. Warung Sate Barongan Pak Uniq (Mr. Uniq’s Barongan Brochettes Stall), that’s the name of this stand, open from noon until night. For you who don’t know yet, “sate” or “satai” is small pieces of meat roasted on skewer. This is a common food in Indonesia. Meanwhile, I cannot figure out what “barongan” is. May be it likes barongan in the context of Reog Ponorogo’s art: someone who used to eat everything. Coincidently, in this food stall, you can eat (almost) everything too. Its service is semi buffet. The customer may take cooked rice and chips in the corner of the stall room, as much as he wants! So, the customer with a big appetite would be spoiled here. Then how is reputation of this stall? Since I visited it only once, I don’t know precisely. But occasionally the artists and high functionaries of East Java took a lunch or dine here, [...]

About one kilometer to the west from Bangkalan city, East Java province, a food stall stands on the edge of the shore. It is Madurasa. This stall is located near the mangrove forest spread out along the west side of Madura island. Following the instinct to eat, I visited here. Soon, the ambiance of mountain range and shore welcomed me. The stall dishes up us the fresh food from the sea, Madura sea. There are shrimps, crabs, snappers, gourami, dorang fish, etc. Like any other seafood restaurants, as a customer you may freely choose the living sea creatures you desire to eat. Then, all you have to do is wait your order served in minutes while enjoying the vista of the coast looks out on the Borneo island. It is going to be a little bit longer due to Ida’s cooking method. Ida and her employees have been using traditional way of cooking for years. They roast fishes with the charcoal. I don’t know what good is it. She said, “By that, we can keep smell the fish’s natural aroma.” Just add it with the specialty of Madura’s flavor (i.e. salty-sweet-spicy), voilà, seafood à la Madura! The price, of course, [...]

By Ihsan Maulana Going home from my personal educational tour around Jombang city, I made a stop at the heritage sites of former Majapahit Kingdom, at Trowulan Village, Mojokerto regency, East Java Province. It’s not far from Pacet. Finding such sites is easy. Once we reach Trowulan, we will see many signposts direct to unique and historic places around: Majapahit Monastery, Segaran Pool, and other temples. Among those interesting sites, I visited Candi Tikus (the Rat Temple). It is located at southern of Trowulan Village, about 1.5 kilometers from the Surabaya-Mojokerto main road. Entering Candi Tikus, soon a well-decorated garden greeted me. So friendly. So calm. So relaxing. If you go to Candi Tikus on weekdays like I did, indeed, it would not be crowded. This is such nuance preferred by the explorers and researchers. Otherwise you want a bustling atmosphere, just go on holidays. Candi Tikus perhaps is the most exciting recent archaeological finding at Trowulan. Its discovery happened in 1914. The government subsequently restored to its present condition in 1985 and 1989. According to a folk whom I interviewed, they named it “rat” because there was the rampant rats, destroying hectares of people’s paddy. Trowulan farmers were then [...]
